• This book tells the story of how people across America—including kids!—helped to erect the Statue of Liberty!

• Use pages 2-3 of the issue to do this scavenger hunt as a group.

1. In the brown box, find the word that means a reddish-brown metal. Circle it.

2. Find the picture that shows the Statue of Liberty’s “bones.” Put a ✔ on it.

3. Find the heading. Underline it.

4. Look at the green box. Count the spikes in the Statue of Liberty’s crown.

Skill: writing and drawing

Materials: My Statue skill sheet, pencils, crayons

• Now that kids have learned about the Statue of Liberty, invite them to design their own statue!
• First, look at a photo of Statue of Liberty together. Point out that Lady Liberty is holding a torch, or light, in one hand, and a tablet, or book, in the other. She is wearing a robe and a crown.
• Now pass out the skill sheet. Have children color and complete the figure to look like themselves. What do they want to wear and hold? Have them add features that represent things about themselves. Then have kids label the parts of their statue!
